Boilers rarely fail without warning. They just warn you quietly, in ways that are easy to live with for a few months — until the week you cannot.
These are the five we hear most often, usually described as "it has been doing that for a while".
1. The pressure keeps dropping
Topping the system up now and again is normal. Topping it up every few weeks is not. Water is leaving the system somewhere, and it is going somewhere — often somewhere you would rather find sooner than later.
2. It takes longer to heat up than it used to
Gradual is the key word. Nobody notices a system getting five minutes slower each month, but a year of that is a boiler working much harder than it should, usually because of build-up in the system.
3. New noises
Banging, gurgling or a kettle-like rumble are all worth mentioning. They usually indicate circulation problems rather than the boiler itself, but they are the system telling you something has changed.
4. Radiators that need bleeding constantly
Once a year is routine. Once a month means air is getting in, and air gets in the same way water gets out.
5. It locks out and you reset it
A boiler that shuts itself down and needs resetting is doing exactly what it was designed to do — refusing to run in a condition it was told to refuse. Resetting it clears the symptom. It does not clear the reason, and the reason is worth knowing.
The pattern
All five have one thing in common: they are livable. That is precisely why they get ignored until the boiler stops on a cold morning and the problem becomes urgent, expensive and inconvenient in one go.
If two or more of these sound familiar, do not wait for the third. Book a service or tell us what it is doing and we will give you an honest read.
