You will see "RGII registered" on our vans, on our paperwork and at the bottom of this website. Most people have never had a reason to find out what it means. It is worth two minutes, because it is the single most useful question you can ask anyone who is about to work on your gas.
The short version
In Ireland, work on domestic gas installations must be carried out by a Registered Gas Installer. Registration is not a badge someone buys — it involves assessment, and registered installers are subject to inspection and can be removed from the register.
It exists for one reason: gas work that is done badly does not usually look done badly. A poor gas job and a good gas job can look identical from your kitchen.
What it means in practice
A registered installer can legally carry out gas work and can issue the certification that goes with it. That paperwork matters more than people expect — for insurance, for landlord obligations, and for selling a house.
It also means there is somewhere to go if something is wrong. An unregistered person who did your boiler badly and stopped answering the phone leaves you with no recourse and a problem you cannot see.
How to check
Ask. Anyone registered will tell you without hesitation and can show you their identification card. Registration can also be verified independently through RGII rather than taking anybody's word for it — including ours.
If someone is evasive about it, that is your answer.
The uncomfortable bit
The cheapest quote for gas work is sometimes cheap because it skips this. That saving is not a saving; it is a transfer of risk from the person doing the work to the person living in the house.
